The price of a first-class postage stamp in the United States in 1982 was 20 cents. This is the equivalent of 47.6 cents in 2012 dollars; in 2012, the price of a stamp was actually 45 cents. The price of stamps was raised from 18 cents on November 1, 1981.

First-class postage stamps remained priced at 20 cents until February 17, 1985, at which point the price was raised to 22 cents. As of January 26, 2014, when rates were increased to 49 cents, first-class stamp prices had been raised 16 times since 1982 but had generally remained in line with inflation.
