Muslims fast and pray during the month of Ramadan. Most will not eat or drink from sunrise to sunset during the holiday. Ramadan is one of the five Pillars of Islam and is observed as the month in which the Qur'an was revealed.
Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar; on the Julian calendar it moves back approximately 12 days each year. Muslims use Ramadan as a time to become spiritually renewed and to practice self control by spending extra time in prayer. The month typically lasts 29 to 30 days. The end of Ramadan is celebrated during the three days of Eid al Fitr, when the fast is broken.
