The name of the naval base located at Great Lakes, Illinois is Naval Station Great Lakes. The base is located near Chicago and is the largest training facility in the Navy.
Naval Station Great Lakes, or NAVSTA Great Lakes, was approved by Theodore Roosevelt in 1904, and dedicated by William Howard Taft in 1911. Its primary mission is to enable the Naval fleet and provide operational support for tenant commands. As of 2015, the base includes over 1,000 buildings situated across approximately 1,600 acres. Current tenants include the Recruit Training Command, which is the Navy’s sole basic training facility; Training Support Center, which is the Navy’s primary training command; and the Navy Recruiting District Chicago.
