The orangutan in the Disney film "The Jungle Book" is named King Louie. This character does not appear in the original stories written by Rudyard Kipling.
Rudyard Kipling wrote a collection of short stories called "The Jungle Book" in 1894 and a sequel called "The Second Jungle Book" in 1895. In these stories, the monkeys are called the "Bandar-log," which translates from Hindi as "monkey people." In the books, these monkeys do not have a leader or individual names. King Louie was introduced in the 1967 Disney film adaptation, though orangutans are not native to India where the story is set. The only other monkey to be given a name in the film version is King Louie's servant, Flunkey the Monkey.
