What do you need to start growing a grapevine plant?

To start growing grapevine plants, you need 1-year-old bare root plants of your preferred grape variety, a planting space with full sun, ample water supply, and a trellis or arbor. Start planting the bare root plants in spring to give them enough time to get established before winter.
Soak the bare root plants in water for two to three hours before planting. Dig a hole in the soil 12-inches deep and 12-inches wide to spread the root system and cover the roots with top soil. Don't add mulch. Water the vines after planting and regularly throughout the first year. To prevent disease, train the vines to grow upward using the trellis as support.
