When do you plant grape vines?

Grape vines should be planted in the early spring when the soil becomes pliant and workable. Planting in the spring as early as possible gives the vines ample time to grow.
Grapes prefer strong sunlight, so they should be planted on southern slopes that face the sun during the majority of the day, with little shade. Depending on the variety, grapes are more or less cold resistant; North American grapes and hybrids are better suited to cool climates than European grapes. However, grapes of all varieties require slightly acidic soil. Grapes also require supports so that the vines can grow upward rather than across the ground. This reduces the risk of disease and makes harvesting easier.
