Why is Neil Armstrong famous?

Neil Armstrong is an American astronaut who is famous for being the first man to walk on the moon. On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong took a step off the lunar landing module and became the first man to walk on the moon, collect samples and take photographs.

After stepping off the Eagle landing module, Neil Armstrong spoke the famous words, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." Although the moon is 240,000 miles from Earth, more than 1 billion people listening on Earth heard those words. Armstrong returned home to receive several awards that included the Congressional Space Medal of Honor and the Medal of Freedom.
