Neil Armstrong first stepped on the moon with his left foot as he uttered, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." Armstrong and his fellow astronauts arrived on the moon in an Eagle landing craft on July 21, 1969.

The astronaut Buzz Aldrin become the second person to set foot on the moon, following Armstrong on the same day. Both astronauts spent a total of 21 hours on the moon, collecting samples. Six Apollo missions brought an additional 10 astronauts to the surface of the moon until the final lunar landing mission, Apollo 17, in 1972.
