Lance Armstrong won his first Tour de France bicycle race in 1999 as part of the U.S. Postal Team. That began a streak of seven consecutive Tour de France wins by Armstrong that ended with his final win in 2005.

Before winning the 1999 Tour de France, Armstrong competed in the race three times. His first attempt was in 1993. He was unable to complete the entire race but did win one stage of the race. During his second attempt in 1995, he completed the race in 36th place. His third attempt was once again incomplete due to a bout of bronchitis. Armstrong's absence from the race from 1996 through 1999 was due to a battle with testicular cancer.
