Neil Armstrong landed on the moon on July 20, 1969, at 4:18 p.m. EDT. He landed as part of the Apollo 11 mission, which made Armstrong and fellow astronaut Buzz Aldrin the first humans on the moon.

The Apollo 11 craft was launched by NASA on July 16 from Kennedy Space Center in Merritt Island, Fla. It arrived safely back on Earth on July 24, splashing down in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The astronaut Michael Collins also participated in the flight. Within the next four years, an additional 10 astronauts landed on the moon and walked on it.
