Is New Year's Eve a bank holiday?

New Year's Eve is not a bank holiday in the United States. New Year's Day, is considered a bank holiday, along with Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

If a holiday lands on a Sunday, banks traditionally observe that day the following Monday by closing. A bank holiday is only observed when the holiday is considered a federal holiday. Easter, Arbor Day, Halloween, Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve are not federal holidays, so they are not bank holidays. During a bank holiday, all banking activities cease.
