Form NJ-1040 is the form New Jersey residents use to file their state individual income taxes, according to the form’s instructions. Nonresidents use Form NJ-1040NR. Both forms are available on the Division of Taxation’s website along with the respective instructions and related schedules.
The instructions for Form NH-1040 explain who must file a New Jersey resident income tax return. Filing status and gross income determine whether a taxpayer must file a return. Age is not a factor in the determination. The instructions further note that, in general, the return is due at the same time as the federal return. An extension of time may be granted for filing the return but not for payment of tax due.
