"The House is Black," "A Separation," "The Color of Paradise," "Children of Heaven" and "Turtles Can Fly" are some notable Iranian films. In 2012, "A Separation" became the first Iranian movie to win Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards.

"A Separation," written, directed and produced by Asghar Farhadi, also received a nomination for Best Original Screenplay at the 2012 Academy Awards. It was the first non-English film to be nominated for the award since Guillermo Del Toro's "Pan's Labyrinth" in 2007. The 1999 family drama "Children of Heaven" is the only other Iranian film to have earned a Best Foreign Language Film nomination at the Academy Awards, as of 2015.
