Is Obama a Democrat or a Republican?

Elected as the 44th president of the United States, President Barack Obama is a registered Democrat. Although he was born in Hawaii, he hails from the state of Illinois, where he served as the state's junior senator.

President Obama was born on Aug. 4, 1961, in Honolulu, Hawaii. He moved to Chicago following graduation from Harvard Law School where he worked at the University of Chicago teaching constitutional law. As a Democrat, he served in Illinois State Senate in 1996, failed to win a seat to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2000 and became a U.S. Senator in 2004. He was the keynote speaker during the 2004 Democratic National Convention.
