Ofsted was introduced into the United Kingdom in 1992. In 2007, the organization was expanded to include children's social services. Ofsted is an independent, non-ministerial government group that reports to Parliament.

Ofsted inspects and regulates education and training at all levels. It is responsible for regulating social services programs that handle children. The group regularly inspects schools, universities, teacher education programs, work-based learning, adult learning communities and in-prison training courses.

Her Majesty's Chief Inspector (HMCI) heads the organization. The HMCI and the Executive Board of Directors meet every two weeks to ensure that the policies of the organization are being followed.
