Is it okay to write a resume cover letter "to whom it may concern"?

Using "To whom it may concern" as a salutation on a resume cover letter is not the most effective way to get a resume noticed. Employers often regard generic salutations as a demonstration of an applicant's lack of initiative.

If a job listing in a newspaper or online job search site does not include a contact name, visit the company's website to try to identify a specific individual or contact the company directly to find out to whom the letter and resume can be sent. If a contact name is available but the person's gender is unclear, open the letter with the first and last name, excluding any gender-specific title.
