Optimal DHEA-sulfate levels vary by sex and age. For a female between the ages of 18 and 19, levels of 145 to 395 ug/dL are considered normal, as of 2014. For a male between the ages of 18 and 19, values of 108 to 441 ug/dL are acceptable.
DHEA-sulfate is an androgen produced by both sexes in the adrenals. A DHEA-sulfate test is designed to test the function of the adrenal glands and diagnose abnormal conditions, such as cancerous or non-cancerous tumors of the adrenal glands and congenital adrenal hyperplasia. It can also help detect early puberty in adolescents and uncover causes of excessive hair growth in women.
