What part of the brain controls balance?

The cerebellum is the part of the brain that controls balance. It is responsible for coordination, fine muscle control, posture and equilibrium, in addition to attention and language. It is found at the back of the brain.
When looking at the structure of the brain, the cerebellum appears to be anatomically separate from the rest of the organ. Instead of the irregular groves found on the cerebral cortex, the cerebellum is covered in closely spaced, parallel lines, giving it a distinct look. However, the cerebellum is not separate from the rest of the brain. Instead, it is made of cerebral cortex tissue, tightly folded like an accordion.
