Where do apes live?

In the wild, apes live in Africa and Indonesia. Four species of apes exist: gorillas, chimpanzees, orangutans and bonobos. Chimpanzees, gorillas and bonobos live in Africa, while orangutans live on islands in Malaysia and Indonesia.

African apes live in groups called troops, while orangutans tend to be solitary animals who prefer spending time alone. Orangutans spend most of their time in trees. They are the largest tree-dwelling animal in the world. Chimpanzees are the most social of the apes. They live in communities of 15 to 120 animals or more. The communities are split into subgroups with a male chimpanzee as the leader.
