When were dogs domesticated?

Recent evidence suggests that dogs were first domesticated anywhere between 18,000 and 36,000 years ago. However, there is still much left to study and the evidence is not conclusive.

What is known about the domestication of dogs is that they were fully integrated into human society as recently as 10,000 years ago. However, a fossil found in Siberia counters the previous thought that dogs were domesticated 12,000 years ago in East Asia. Using mitochondrial DNA sampling, scientists discovered the remains of a dog that bore a closer genetic resemblance to a domesticated dog than to a wolf. However, the test used only a small portion of the dog's genome, and further fossil finds are necessary to continue the study.
