The pfennig is an obsolete coin that was once used as currency in Germany. It was phased out when the Euro was introduced to the country in 2002.
The pfennig was introduced in the 9th century and remained in use until the Euro was adopted. Though it initially had a higher value, over time it became the smallest denomination of currency in the country. One pfennig was roughly equivalent to one British or American penny. The pfennig was used in both East and West Germany and continued to be used after unification. There were 100 pfennige to every one mark.
