Philadelphia is not a state. It is the most populous city in Pennsylvania and has a population of about 1.55 million as of 2013. It is nicknamed the City of Brotherly Love.
The area that became Philadelphia was first settled by Dutch settlers in the early 17th century and later by groups from Sweden. Philadelphia was founded in 1682 by William Penn as the capital city of Pennsylvania Colony. It was incorporated as a city in 1701. Prior to European contact, the territory was inhabited by the Lenape Indians.
Benjamin Franklin is one of Philadelphia's most well-known citizens. He was involved with developing fire protection and libraries.
