When do you plant peonies?

Peonies should be planted at the beginning of fall, usually during September and October. Planting peonies in the spring or too late in the autumn results in the plant not blooming for another one or two years. Peonies grow best in cool climates, preferring high sun exposure.
In order for peony flowers to bloom, the plants need exposure to the winter cold. They should be planted away from other shrubs and trees and protected from heavy winds. Organic mulch spread on the ground where peonies are planted helps to keep the soil cool, preserves moisture and prevents weeds from growing.
