When should you plant daylilies?

A gardener should plant daylily bulbs in autumn. The plant blooms in spring, summer and fall, but needs a cold dormant period to develop properly.

Daylilies require six to eight hours of sunshine for full blooming potential. The bulbs need plentiful water all year to prevent drying. During the plant's growth, a person should apply a high-potash fertilizer every two weeks. Fertilizers formulated for lilies and other bulb flowers are available at most nurseries or plant supply stores. Daylilies require trimming when the blooms fade to promote new growth. Pet owners should keep animals away from the flowers because they are poisonous.
