When should you plant daffodils?

Plant daffodil bulbs in the fall, at least 2 to 4 weeks before the ground freezes. In most regions, this means planting in September or early October. Daffodils bloom in the late winter or early spring.
Daffodils grow best in regions with cold winters and cool springs and summers. Plant the bulbs 1 1/2 to 5 times their own depth, keeping at least 3 inches of soil over them if the winter is predicted to be harsh. Daffodils like full sun or slight shade. When the daffodils finish blooming in the spring, cut back the stems, but allow the leaves to die off naturally. This creates more compost and nutrients for the bulbs.
