Who makes Pontiac vehicles?

The Pontiac brand of vehicles is owned by General Motors. Pontiac cars were first released in 1926 as a companion brand to the Oakland line of cars in a marketing strategy to offer a more affordable alternative to Oaklands.

In 1907, Edward Murphy formed the Oakland Motor Car Company in the town of Pontiac, Mich. General Motors purchased this company in 1909. After its release in 1926, Pontiac sales continued to climb until they surpassed Oakland sales. This led to the Oakland Motor Car Company division of General Motors being officially renamed the Pontiac Motor Car Company. The Pontiac brand lasted until General Motors retired it in 2009.
