Pope Francis was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on December 17, 1936. His birth name is Jorge Mario Bergoglio, and he is the first pope from the Americas.

Pope Francis is the 266th pope of the Roman Catholic Church, elected by an assembly of 115 cardinals in March 2013. He is the first pope from the Jesuit order of the Catholic Church and adopted the name Francis after St. Francis of Assisi of Italy. Known and admired for his humility, Pope Francis established a conservative tone for his papacy and is often portrayed by the media as a compassionate reformist due to his comments regarding homosexuality, international conflict, family planning and marriage topics.
