What is a pre-basted turkey?

A pre-basted turkey, which is also known as self-basted turkey, is a turkey that has been marinated via a solution injection prior to product labelling. The solution that is used to make a pre-basted turkey typically includes turkey broth, spices or salt.

Other ingredients that are added to a pre-basted turkey could also include flavor enhancers and seasoning. The net weight of a pre-basted turkey is generally higher than a turkey that has not been pre-basted. As of 2015, labels on pre-basted turkeys must include the weight of the added solution as well as all of the ingredients that are used in it.
