What is a purple tip anemone?

A purple-tip anemone is a type of sea anemone found in Bermuda. This species is also known as the giant Caribbean anemone or the pink-tipped anemone. It is only found in the Atlantic Ocean, and it thrives mostly in shallow water, typically near inshore areas on the island.

Purple-tip anemones are often difficult to identify because of the variations in pedal disk and tentacle color. The color of the tentacles and column can differ in each individual anemone. Its tentacles can have purple-, rose- or green-colored tips, and its column can be bluish gray, yellow or brick red. It often develops a symbiotic relationship with cleaner shrimp.
