In New Jersey, one must either be homeless, at risk of becoming homeless or have experienced a sudden loss of food, housing or clothing due to a man-made or natural disaster in order to qualify for temporary rental assistance. The elderly, disabled and those with income limits may also qualify.
The elderly must be over the age of 62 to qualify, while those who are disabled must be the head of a household or the spouse. Low-income families qualify if their monthly income does not exceed 30 percent of the area median income as defined by the region and household size. These definitions are published annually by the United States of Housing and Urban Development.
