Eye pressure occurs when the eye does not produce and drain fluid properly, according to WebMD. The eye contains channels that drain fluid, and when those channels malfunction, the eye continues to produce fluid, resulting in an excessive amount of fluid. This raises the eye's pressure levels.
High intraocular pressure increases the risk of glaucoma occurring in people with ocular hypertension, states WebMD. High pressure levels in the eye can also cause damage to the optic nerve in the eye. Slowly, over time, intraocular pressure increases. Young people with pressure in the eyes should seek immediate medical treatment, as the risk of a damaged optic nerve increases with age.
