According to the National Institutes for Health, the recommended daily intake of vitamin D is 600 IU for people ages 1 to 70 and 800 IU for people over the age of 70. Because vitamin D is found in very few foods, supplementation is commonly used to meet this requirement.
Vitamin D is found naturally in small quantities in fatty fish, eggs, cheese and beef liver, according to the National Institutes of Health. Milk is also fortified with vitamin D, while other products made from milk such as yogurt and cheese are not. Vitamin D needs can also be met through exposure to sunlight.
