To remove a red drink stain from carpet, blot any liquid from the fibers, apply a solution of dishwashing liquid and water, clean the area with a vinegar solution, remove any remaining stain with an ammonia solution, and rinse the area with water. Begin the stain-removal process quickly to achieve the best results.
- Blot the liquid
As soon as you discover the stain, use clean paper towels to soak up as much of the liquid as possible. Blot the stain without scrubbing.
- Wash the stain
Mix 1/2 teaspoon of mild dishwashing liquid in 1 cup of warm water. Do not use dishwasher detergent or laundry detergent, which are too strong and leave residue on carpet fibers. Use a white towel to apply the solution to the stain, beginning at the outside and working toward the center.
- Clean the stain with mild acid
Mix 2 parts of vinegar with 1 part of water. Follow the same procedure as you did with the dishwashing liquid.
- Remove any remnants of the stain
Mix a tablespoon of household ammonia in 1 cup of water. Blot any remnants of the stain from the outside toward the center.
- Rinse the carpet
Use cold tap water to rinse the carpet, using a towel as before. Aim a fan toward the spot to ensure that the carpet dries.
