What does "region" mean?

A region is a significant area or space within a larger territory. In some cases, a region has undefined boundaries. Regions typically are significant in size and consist of contiguous space. In non-physical use of the word, a region can refer to an indefinite but specified area.

The United States is often divided into different regions by geographers. National Geographic lists the five common U.S. regions as West, Midwest, Northeast, Southeast and Southwest. Each region is known for distinct cultural attributes shared by the people who live there. Common foods are enjoyed in different regions, for instance. Geographic regions can be defined according to physical or artificial features.
