What region of the United States has the highest population?

The United States Census splits the country into four regions: northeast, midwest, west and south. Of these regions, as of 2013 the south has the largest total population with more than 118 million inhabitants or 37.4 percent of the country's total population.
As of 2013, the western region is the second most populated region in the country and contains 23.5 percent of the population with 74 million people, while the midwest is a close third with 67 million people. Despite containing the biggest city in the country, New York City, the northeast is actually the least populated part of the country, as it has just under 56 million people or 17.7 percent of the total U.S. population.
