What is the regulation height for a handicapped ramp?

The 2010 Americans with Disabilities Act standards state that the regulation height of handrails for a standard handicapped ramp is between 34 and 38 inches. If the primary users are children, a second set of handrails with a maximum height of 28 inches may be added.

When determining proper height, always measure from the surface of the ramp to the top of the gripping surface, as the standards suggest. If two sets of handrails are installed, allow a minimum of 9 inches vertical clearance to ensure safety. If the handrail is attached to a wall or other structure, the minimum clearance between the gripping surface of the handrail and the structure should be 1 1/2 inches.
