Remove Sharpie ink from clothes as soon as possible. Read the manufacturer's clothing label, then lay the article on folded paper towels and apply an appropriate solvent. Continue applying solvent until the stain disappears, then launder the garment according to the instructions.
- Treat the stain quickly
Permanent marker stains are easier to remove if the process begins as quickly as possible after you stain the clothing. The older the stain, the more difficult it becomes to remove.
- Read the manufacturer's label
Before applying any solvent to a garment, read the manufacturer's label. If in doubt about the solvent of choice, test it on an inconspicuous part of the garment before beginning stain removal.
- Lay the stained article on folded paper towels
Fold paper towels to form a pad, and place this under the stained area. Change the pad once it is saturated with ink and solvent.
- Apply solvent
Permanent markers do not dissolve in water, but they are soluble in various other solvents. Good choices include rubbing alcohol, oil-free hairspray, denatured alcohol and acetone. Begin with rubbing alcohol. Check the paper towel to see if the ink is transferring. If so, continue using the alcohol. If necessary, however, rinse the alcohol out of the fabric and move on to a stronger solvent. Wash and dry the garment as usual once you remove the stain.
