Tar on carpet is a tough stain to remove, but it can be done by using a solution of liquid dish soap and water. For tougher stains, hydrogen peroxide or a carpet cleaning solution may help.
The important part of cleaning tar out of a carpet is to get to the stain as soon as possible. As soon as the stain is discovered, blot up as much of the tar residue as possible before using something to remove the stain.
- Blot up the stain
- Vacuum
- Create a cleaning solution

- Vacuum
Using paper towels, blot the stain to get rid of as much of the stain as possible.
Vacuum the stain to remove any loose particles.
Mix together a solution of warm water and 1/4 cup liquid dish soap. Spread the solution on the carpet, beginning on the outside of the stain and working inward. This will prevent the stain from spreading.
Once the stain disappears, create a thick layer of paper towels and place them on the stain. Weigh down the paper towels and leave them to soak up the stain overnight.
Once the spot is dry, vacuum to remove any residual debris.
If the above method does not work, replace the dish soap mixture with 3 percent hydrogen peroxide. Follow the steps as listed above.
