To repair a cracked acrylic bathtub, drill holes around the crack, insert foam, apply filler, sand it, paint the surface, and buff it. This one-day project requires a drill, foam insulation, polyester filler, a knife, a rubber applicator, sandpaper, rags, alcohol, paint, a paint gun, urethane compound and a buffer.
- Drill holes around the crack
Drill holes around the crack to form a 12-inch square. Pack the holes with foam insulation, and trim the excess with a knife. Buff the surface with 240-grit sandpaper, and then drill one hole at each end of the crack. Leave the end holes empty.
- Apply polyester filler
Use a rubber applicator to fill the crack with polyester filler. Smooth the surface, and dry it according to the manufacturer's instructions. Sand the dried filler with fine sandpaper.
- Remove sanding debris
Wet a rag with denatured alcohol, and wipe the sanded filler. Ensure no sanding debris remains.
- Paint the repaired crack
Load a spray gun with bathtub repair paint, apply one light coat, and let it dry. Apply additional coats until the repair is no longer visible.
- Buff the tub
Apply urethane polishing compound, and buff it into the tub. Polish the repair until its edges blend seamlessly into the surrounding acrylic.
