How do you repair a toilet flange?

Replacing a toilet flange is often a difficult task. Installing a flange repair plate is often an easier option to resecure the toilet to the floor. The repair requires removing the toilet, so purchase a wax ring and replacement closet bolts to complete the repair.
- Remove the toilet
Turn off the supply valve at the wall. Flush the toilet. Use a plunger to remove as much water as possible from the bowl. Remove the closet bolts at the base of the toilet. Place a bucket underneath the tank, and disconnect the supply line, catching as much of the water that drains from the tank as possible. Lift the toilet off the closet bolts, and set aside.
- Remove the old wax ring
Use a putty knife to scrape away the old wax ring. Remove the old closet bolts from the flange.
- Install the repair ring
Place the ring over the existing flange. Align the holes, and use the supplied bolts to connect the repair ring to the existing flange. Place the replacement closet bolts in the appropriate slots in the ring. Place the new wax ring on the repair ring.
- Install the toilet
Align the toilet with the closet bolts. Press into place to create a seal with the wax ring. Tighten the nuts on the closet bolts. Use plastic shims to prevent the toilet from rocking on the floor. Attach the supply valve, and turn on the water.
