Romania Tourism, a website dedicated to tourists interested in visiting the country, states that Romanian banknotes are referred to singularly as leu. However, the plural form of the word, lei (pronounced "lay"), is used more often. Romanian coins are referred to as bani (pronounced "bahnee").
The banknotes found in Romania consist of one, five, 10, 50, 100 and 500 lei denominations. The front of each leu holds a commemorative image of a previous prime minister. The coins consist of one, five, 10 and 50 bani pieces. The front of the coins, unlike the banknotes, displays Romania's coat of arms rather than a historical person.
