What is Peruvian money called?

The currency of Peru is the Nuevo Sol, or the plural Nuevos Soles (currency sign: S/.). This currency is fairly new, put into use in 1991, replacing the Peruvian inti. As of June 17, 2014, one Peruvian Nuevo Sol is equivalent to about 36 cents U.S. currency.

Like most other currencies, the Nuevo Sol is available in banknotes and coins. The banknotes are available in 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 Nuevo Sol denominations. Peru has two types of coins. The smallest denominations are in 5, 10, 20 and 50 centimos. These are used like pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters in the United States. Also used are 1, 2 and 5 Nuevo Sol coins in place of smaller bills.
