What is an RTF file?

An RTF, or Rich Text Format, file is a type of file format developed by Microsoft for storing formatted text. RTF files can be opened, edited and saved in any word processor.

The original format was created by several members of a development team for Microsoft Word. The final version of the format was released in 2008, and no further updates to the format are expected as of 2014.

Usage of RTF files has declined following the standardization of PDF, or Portable Document Format, files as a popular way of sharing documents. Nonetheless, RTF is still commonly used as a way of extracting text from one document for conversion to another file format.
