What is a TIF file?

A TIF file is a file that contains an image or a graphic. The acronym stands for tagged image file. A TIF file can be viewed by opening a graphic-manipulation application.

TIF files can also be viewed in notepad or other text editors. After a user double clicks on the file, the computer opens the file in the format's default program.

TIF files can be converted to other formats. However, simply changing the extension does not work. The file needs to be opened and saved as another image type. It is also possible to use an online program to convert the TIF file to another format.
