As of November 2013, the hottest pepper in the world is the Carolina Reaper. Its rating on the Scoville scale averages at 1.57 million heat units, but it has been recorded as peaking at over 2.2 million SHU.

The Carolina Reaper was bred in South Carolina as a cross between the ghost chili pepper and the red habanero pepper. It grew to fame when a reporter shared his experiences of rolling around on the floor and hallucinating after trying the pepper. It beat out the Trinidad moruga scorpion (averaging at 1.2 million SHU) for hottest pepper in the world.

The jalapeño pepper averages between 1,000 and 4,000 SHU, making the Carolina Reaper 392 to 1,570 times hotter.
