Although it may be safe to fly as early as the day after cataract surgery, it is advised that an individual discuss any postsurgery air travel with his ophthalmologist, suggests Wayne Bizer, D.O., of EyeSmart. The surgeon usually needs to examine the patient in the days following the operation.
In the week or two following cataract surgery, complications can arise. Although this rarely occurs, it can be serious. This is why a surgeon normally sees the patient the day after surgery and about five to eight days after, which is why air travel might best be delayed, according to Dr. Bizer.
