According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Department of Natural Resources officers make a rough average of $48,000 annually, as of 2012. DNR conservation officers, also sometimes known as fish and game wardens, are technically law enforcement officers.
Historically, DNR officers were only responsible for enforcing laws related to hunting, fishing and boating. More recently, many states have expanded the job description to include conservation of wetlands, waterways and other environments, changing the job title to match these developments. DNR officers may have different duties in different states and, accordingly, different salaries. The BLS lists New Jersey as the highest-paying state for DNR officers, at around $79,500 per year, while Georgia is the lowest, at around $33,700 per year, as of 2012.
