What are the sales tax rates in North Carolina?

As of 2015, the total sales tax rates for most North Carolina counties range from 6.75 to 7 percent, according to the North Carolina Department of Revenue. Most individual county taxes range between 2 and 2.25 percent, while the state sales tax of North Carolina is 4.75 percent, states TaxRates.com.

Of the 100 counties in the state, only three exceed local sales tax rates of 2.25 percent due to an additional 0.5 percent transit county sales and use tax -- Mecklenburg, Durham and Orange counties. On April 1st, 2015, total sales tax rates in 21 North Carolina counties increased from 6.75 percent to 7 percent, according to Sale-Tax.com
