What is Sam the ugly dog?

Sam was a Chinese crested hairless dog that was a three-time winner of the annual Sonoma Marin Fair World's Ugliest Dog Contest held in northern California from 2003 to 2005. On November 18, 2005, Sam was euthanized at the age of 15 due to heart complications.

Chinese crested dogs come in two varieties: powder puff and hairless. The hairless Chinese crested dog typically has soft silky hair on its head, tail and feet, while the powder puff variety has a double coat of straight hair that covers its entire body. According to the American Kennel Club, the two varieties can come from the same litter. Chinese crested are classified in the toy group by the AKC.
