Uga is the name of the English bulldog who serves as the official mascot of the University of Georgia. The name is derived from the initials by which the college is also known.
As of September 2014, nine Ugas have been on the sidelines for the University of Georgia football games. Beginning with Uga 1 (who served from 1956 to 1966), each mascot, all of whom have been owned by Savannah attorney and University of Georgia alumnus Sonny Seiler, has descended from the same line. In 1997, Sports Illustrated declared Uga V the "Nation's Best College Mascot." The remains of the deceased Ugas are housed in a mausoleum located in Sanford Stadium on the campus.
